Informa Markets is delighted to announce further growth for the 2019 edition of IFSEC International, FIREX International, Safety & Health Expo and Facilities Show

Taking place on 18-20 June 2019 at ExCeL London, the shows demonstrated notable visitor growth, representing 39,188 unique visitors – including thousands of international visitors from 128 countries – boasting an overall combined budget of £45.7 billion.

FIREX International saw an impressive 4% increase in year-on-year visitors and a 13% increase in the visitor-to-exhibitor ratio. Visitors came from 73 countries, representing a broad cross-section of the fire safety profession: 16% of visitors came from the construction sector, reinforcing the interest we have seen in fire safety in the wake of Grenfell, and complementing the growth in attendance we saw at our Tall Building Fire Safety Conference this year. A further 12% of our audience was involved with manufacturing, revealing a thriving sector bursting with innovation.

Finally, we witnessed a further increase in the number of fire safety installation companies in attendance, which reflects the merging of sectors we are seeing across all four shows in the series. In total, visitors had a combined annual purchasing budget of around £6.3 billion, demonstrating the wealth this sector is accumulating.

Highlighting the increasing importance of FIREX to the global fire safety market, government representation continued to increase at the event, totalling around 8% of total visitors. Furthermore, over a third of visitors were business owners or senior managers, with this increase in high-quality visitors reflected in feedback from our exhibitors.

FIREX International’s growth was driven by a programme of timely, current seminars, most notably a session outlining the findings of the Hackitt review into the Grenfell tragedy, one of the key discussions within the industry.

Furthermore, FIREX officially launched its new Egypt show, set to open on 3-5 November 2019 in Cairo. This represents a significant expansion of the FIREX brand, bringing this world-class industry events to major new markets across Africa and the Middle East.

Commenting on this year’s success, Exhibition Director Simon Young said, “It’s been another successful year for FIREX International. We’ve continued to deliver a world-class event at the forefront of the fire safety profession – and we’ve seen this borne out in significant growth in installers, construction and manufacturing professionals and representatives from government. FIREX is critical for the industry, and the growing, high quality audience is testament to this.”

The year ahead

These strong numbers represented the four events’ continued centrality to their respective industries. Showcasing the most innovative products, providing education and helping connect thousands of professionals with hundreds of leading exhibitors, each has proved itself an essential part of the industry calendar, reflected in the visitor growth and their continued innovation.

Next year, IFSEC International, FIREX International, Safety & Health Expo and Facilities Show will take place on 19-21 May 2020. The date change, announced earlier this year, has been made so that all four events will better reflect the industry calendar and give exhibitors and visitors a longer period of time in which to continue their conversations before the summer period – don’t forget to add it to your diaries.

Life safety is a right not a privilege: How FIREX International 2018 formed part of the answer

Over 18,000 visitors – representing a 12% increase on the 2017 event; and more than 140 exhibitors – 70 of which were new to this year – came together from 29 countries at FIREX International to drive and reflect on the life safety landscape in the UK.

For three days at ExCeL London, fire safety professionals accessed over 10,000+ life safety solutions held to the highest standards.

Amidst the present national agenda regarding fire safety in the built environment – with a particular emphasis on social housing – FIREX was the dedicated platform for engaging with leading experts, exploring proven technologies and receiving essential guidance.

Gerry Dunphy, Brand Director of FIREX International explained, “It is reflective of the times we’re in that a fully-fledged fire safety event is resonating so deeply with the market, and we’re pleased to see an increase in life safety professionals engaging with the event. The show’s growth is a testament to the industry’s demand for change. Both visitor and exhibitor sentiment reflected the criticality of FIREX, and the conversations held on the show floor speak volumes for the way in which FIREX is changing perceptions around life safety being a right, not a privilege.”

Sales Engineer at Specialist Wiring Accessories explained, “The first two days were probably the busiest days that I’ve ever known at any exhibition. It’s brought forward an extremely good quality of contacts and enquiries.”

The show also welcomed the 5th International Tall Building Fire Safety Conference, exclusive to FIREX, in addition to an in-depth seminar programme across the Expertise & Guidance Theatre, sponsored by BAFE, and the FPA Infozone.

A particular highlight of the seminar programme included Dr Chris Cocking’s talk “Human Behaviour During an Emergency.” This hugely popular seminar, presented at the FPA Infozone, provided insight into the rarity of mass panic, and indicated that there is very little evidence to suggest that people panic if they are made aware of the threat – which means that information should not be withheld. His analysis was paired with a tangible solution to provide vital information about what’s going on, what the threat is and what they need to do to escape it.

New to FIREX International 2018 were Show Me How demonstrations in the brand new Sprinkler Zone. These addressed the fire safety concerns keeping visitors up at night by not only offering the latest solutions and technology, but showing how to use them. There were also live smoke demonstrations by GERDA, showing the crucial role of fire doorsets in passive fire protection.

With a newly introduced fire challenge, the 20th anniversary of the Engineers of Tomorrow competition saw fire apprentices compete in live installation challenges.

The Inspirational Speaker Series also drew massive crowds as the show welcomed a fantastic line-up of world class speakers, including comedian and mental health expert Ruby Wax OBE, English rugby legend Sir Clive Woodward OBE and Nicky Moffat CBE, formerly the British Army’s highest-ranking female officer.

Jeremy Rees, Acting CEO, ExCeL London commented, “We were delighted to welcome FIREX to ExCeL London. Our teams are working closely with UBM to support their ambitions for growth and we are delighted that they had another successful event with us. This event, together with the wider P&M series, is playing a vital role in maintaining and creating safe and secure environments, something that resonates strongly with us. We look forward to welcoming visitors and exhibitors again next year, when they will be able to travel to ExCeL more quickly than ever before via the Elizabeth line.”

TOA Corporation UK takes to the stage at FIREX International 2018

TOA Corporation UK, the leading global manufacturer of cutting edge commercial audio and security equipment, is celebrating its 41st year in the UK and, at FIREX International 2018, will be demonstrating why it is renowned as the provider of more solutions for more markets than any other company.

Leading the way is Malcolm Crummey, sales manager UK & Ireland at TOA Corporation UK, who will present a seminar session on the subject of lockdowns in schools and explain how technology can be used to protect pupils, staff and visitors. A Lesson in Lockdown for Schools will take place on 21st June 12.15pm-12.40pm in the main FIREX theatre and will be of benefit to visitors who want to find out more about why it is so important to have a clear and effective communication system installed in schools in the event of emergencies.

To complement Crummey’s presentation, Stand A365 will feature a range of solutions that can be used as part of a school lockdown system. This includes the IP-1000 IP network audio management system, which can support up to 1,000 IP addresses and consists of network amplifiers, speakers, microphones, and interface units. Management and operation software allows user to make instant and scheduled broadcasts through a single PC and its in-built flexibility allows easy system expansion beyond conventional system coverage.

Another focal point will be the VX-3000 – winner of the InAVation Award 2017. A cost effective, robust, reliable and energy efficient system, which combines all of the important functions for public address and voice alarm (PA/VA) in one unit, its limited number of components makes design and installation easier, saves space, reduces cable complexity, and enables rapid system configuration. A new wall-mounted version of this system – the VX-3000WM – will also be on display, which can be linked to the standard VX-3000 range but also used as a stand-alone unit in reception and building entrance areas. If used in a decentralised system, where the equipment is installed in electrical risers, its compact size is equally beneficial, as it takes up less space than a standard 19-inch equipment rack and saves on cabling back to a central location.

TOA Corporation UK is renowned for the quality of its amplification and speaker systems and visitors will have the chance to see the company’s powerful new 20W IP horn speaker, which is designed for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications and can fully integrate with video management software (VMS) and IP CCTV systems. In addition, the SC-P620 powered horn and HA-1010-EB slim horn array speakers will be on display. The latter, with its extremely long range, can spread sound to over 600m and is perfect for outdoor applications including airports, skiing locations, sports events, public squares or leisure parks.

Last but certainly not least, the N-8000 Series IP network intercom system remains a popular part of the TOA Corporation UK portfolio and it has now been augmented by the N-SP80 SIP video intercom system, which offers flexible audio and video communications using standard SIP protocols. It can integrate with external SIP compatible systems through a SIP server, while a peer-to-peer mode is also available for standalone system operations without a SIP server environment.

Ahead of the event, Malcolm Crummey concluded, ‘FIREX International is one of the highlights of the year for TOA and we are looking forward to giving visitors to Stand A365 the opportunity to get hands-on with our latest innovations, speak to our team of experts and discover the many advantages of working with us.’

For further information please contact please contact Malcolm Crummey by emailing [email protected] or visit www.toa.co.uk. You can also connect with Malcolm through LinkedIn.

Fire Door Safety Week marks 45 years for Geofire

As Fire Door Safety Week begins, UK manufacturer Geofire is celebrating 45 years in the fire industry.

The company began life designing and manufacturing electromagnets for use in fire industry products in 1972, before producing its own range of hard-wired, fire door holders in 1989.

Geofire has continued to grow through its focus on research and development and its ability to design, manufacture and test its products under one roof. This has allowed the business to achieve both the quality required in the industry and empower its engineers to design the next generation of fire products that meet customer’s changing requirements.

In 2013, as sales grew, Geofire relocated to its current purpose built factory and has continued to invest in the latest CNC machinery, automation and testing facilities to ensure it maintains the highest quality standards.

Geofire was first to market with both its wire-free technologies; the Salamander radio-controlled and Agrippa, ‘listen and learn’ technology, sound-activated products, which are mainly used to retrofit into existing buildings. Both brands are battery-powered but are used to serve users with different requirements.

Andy Collinson, CEO of Geofire, explains: “What makes Geofire different is that we are constantly developing our products in the lab to ensure we are always ahead of the game when it comes to fire door technology.

“The team is rightly proud of what has been achieved over the last 45 years and we all excited about the future. We won’t stop, continuous improvement is part of our business and we have some exciting projects in the pipeline.

Nick Goddard, Research and Development Manager who has been an employee since 1994, said: “We are lucky to have a team that is always thinking about the next innovation and of course a management team that invests for the future in our people and their skills, as well as machinery and our manufacturing capabilities.

“Wire-free technology is something we have worked on for a number of years and as we see the market for wire-free technology widen to countries across the world, there is no doubt, despite some scepticism originally, that this technology has begun to build up a reliable and credible reputation for fire protection, in a much easier way than ever before.”

Geofire’s Salamander radio system receives radio signals from a central controller linked to an existing fire panel. It is also specified to the highest fire safety standard in the UK; BS 7273-4 critical actuation (category A).

The Agrippa sound activated devices automatically close fire doors upon hearing the sound of the fire alarm. It is different to similar products on the market because of the intelligent technology used to ‘listen and learn’ the sound of the building’s specific fire alarm, rather than simply a loud noise.

Geofire is part of the British Engines Group, which has seven engineering businesses across the North East of England and offices in 16 other countries worldwide.

Kentec checks-in at Belfast’s iconic Ten Square hotel development

FIREX Stand – E125
A £60m expansion of Belfast’s leading boutique hotel is being protected by a new and upgraded fire safety system that has Kentec’s sector leading control panel technology at its heart. Phase one of Ten Square Hotel Belfast’s impressive 50-bedroom extension was completed in December 2016, with work on the whole project set to finish later this year. This first phase expansion has also added the new Linenhall Business Centre with conferencing, function rooms and events space. The hotel development’s second phase will see a 66-bedroom expansion on the other side of the original hotel building into the former Scottish Amicable Building on Donegall Square to include a spa and gym, and will bring the hotel’s bedroom capacity to over 140.

Specialised Fire & Security supplied and installed a new, networked fire safety system for the new areas of the building whilst also upgrading the hotel’s existing fire system, which involved replacing the existing control panel and integrating the old system into the new one.

Kentec’s flagship ‘open protocol’ Syncro series, recognized as one of the most powerful systems of its type on the market today, guarantees the very highest standards of performance, safety and reliability that such leading edge life-safety installations demand.

Kentec’s Syncro series of fire control panels use the most advanced microprocessor technology to provide a control system of extremely high integrity. Syncro can be configured to suit all types of system from the most simple to the highly complex. Its fully integrated and secure network provides an intelligent interface for building control.

John Moore, Specialised Fire & Security’s Contracts Director, explains ‘We were very pleased to be able to specify Kentec Syncro fire safety control panels for both the new and upgraded parts of the fire safety system. This was not a straightforward installation, as the Kentec panels had to communicate together to run two protocols on the same network of panels for Hochiki detectors installed on the new phase and Apollo detectors on the existing phase of the hotel. We have worked with Kentec on a number of projects and know that we can rely on their products to deliver the performance and reliability critical life-safety projects demand.’
